nerve al. 19 These substa neuroa dopam signifi anemo Puta by Da Dopa) and R Metridium senile tentacles have also been shown to accumulate L-Dopa (Carlberg and Elofsson, 1987; Carlberg, 1990). Here we re-investigate the actions of dopamine on the sea anemones Actinia equina, Urticina felina and Calliactis parasitica, and also consider whether the dopamine precursor L-Dopa and the dopamine metabolite 3,4,5-trihydroxyphenylalanine (5-OH-Dopa) could be neurotransmitters. Although dopamine, L-Dopa and 5-OHDopa have not been identified in Actinia equina, they are known to occur in two closely related species, Urticina felina and Bolocera tueidae (Carlberg and Rosengren, 1985). The physiological actions of dopamine described in this paper are compared with those of a neuropeptide, Antho-RWamide II (Glu-Gly-Leu-Arg-Trp-NH2), that causes contraction of isolated sphincter muscle cells (McFarlane et al. 1991) and thus may be a neurotransmitter. Antho-RWamide II was ry act L-Dop d from itive t al. 19 gically eptides primit

Involvement of GABAergic System in Increased Pentylenetetrazole-Induced Seizure Threshold in Cholestatic Mice

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is an important inhibitory transmitter in central nervous system and is involved in pathophysiology of epilepsy. Pentylenete-trazole (PTZ), a convulsant agent, partly acts via anion channel of GABAA receptor. Ivermectin, an antiparasitic agent and a GABAA agonist, has anticonvulsant effect in animal seizure models. Cholestasis increases ...

Mortality of wild golden grey mullet (Liza auratus) in Iranian waters of the Caspian Sea, associated with viral nervous necrosis-like agent

An acute mortality caused by an uncertain agent occurred in wild golden grey mullet (Liza auratus) population in the Iranian side of the Caspian Sea in February, 2004. Clinical signs of the moribund fish were erratic behavior such as spiral swimming, belly-up at rest and over inflation of swim bladder. Histological examination of brain of dead fish revealed hyperaemia, degeneration and necrosis...

P141: The Role of Microglia in Cortical Spreading Depression in Migraine

Migraine is a disorder that afflicts nearly one tenth of the population. Involving both nervous and vascular system, it has been found as a prominent factor of disability. The migraine attacks may be initiated in the brainstem or may begin peripherally in the meninges while the role of cortical activation preceding an attack is also debated. Although available treatments, more studies on migrai...

P 154: The Role of Inflammation in the Seizure Occurrence

Most common hypotheses of seizure initiation are increased neural excitation, decreased inhibition or both. But, the conditions that lead to these activation states not to be clear yet. Recent studies challenge traditional concepts and indicate new evidence that a key epileptogenic process may actually begin in the blood vessel. Seizures could be initiate by a variety of insults to the brain, s...
